Great games that I’ve tried and that you should too.
Superstorm Melon Date is a visual novel that takes place in a relatively near dystopic future. People live in shelters and return to the surface only periodically because climate change has plagued the earth with frequent superstorms that burden humanity. People have developed widespread allergies and only the rich can raise fully human children. Therefore, a hybrid species of half melon people have outnumbered humans because they have better immune systems. To tie it all together, the plot of the game is about you going on a date with a melon person listed on an internet dating website. A melon person named, Mel.
ToeJam & Earl are two friends who visit Earth from another planet. When they try to blast some funky music from their spaceship, Earl accidentally sucks the entire Earth and themselves into a black hole. Their ship and the planet are left in shambles. Thankfully, as these characters, you can traverse the floating islands of exponentially bizarre inhabitants to collect pieces flung from your ship. Collect items to rebuild your ship and head from there.
Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure is an indie interactive-fiction/visual novel cartoon adventure. The interactive feature is much like you'd see in a hidden object story as well, although clues that you find unlock different possibilities. The story is very comical on purpose and can get as fresh out of the outhouse as you please. Despite this, it is a very well-thought-out mystery story about a complex theft and the clues can leave you curious about what's around every corner.
Aviary Attorney is an interactive hand-illustrated, historical detective fiction that takes place in the earlier half of the 18th century in France. In it, every single character is an anthropomorphic animal inspired by the caricatures of J.J. Grandville. It is also chock full of jokes.
Henchman Story is a cartoony comedy visual novel about life as a henchman for a supervillain named Lord Bedlam. You'll live life within the ranks of other henchmen in dorm-style accommodations within the secret hideout or out in the field, holding your ground against superheroes who want to foil Lord Bedlam's operations.
VirtuaVerse is an indie cyberpunk pixel art point and click adventure that exudes what some might think of as classic cyberpunk. You, a hacker named Nathan, wake in your apartment, which your girlfriend has changed the exit code to. Stylistically it appeals to an aesthetic of disheveled, neon glow surrounded by cybernetic paraphernalia. Solve enigmatic puzzles to progress the story.
The Pizza Situation is an indie game project about a freshman college student named Roni. He has a dream about seeing a girl with pink hair at a party and her stealing a slice of pizza from him. His goal is to use social networking to solve the problem and prevent this girl in his dream from doing so in real life.
SteamWorld Dig 2 is a 2D platformer about a society of humanoid robots, particularly the protagonist Dorothy McCrank, that's you. The village is plagued by earthquake-ridden mines beneath a village from which they are generally dependent on the ore mined.
This is a visual novel/interactive fiction about you moving into a town of cryptids. If you're unfamiliar with the term, cryptids belong to the pseudoscientific/mystical study of cryptozoological creatures, mythical beasts basically. Bigfoot, Mothman, etc. Cryptid Crush also includes supernatural creatures like ghosts and other questionables.
Ader the buck is your basic rural raised one-eyed stag from the country, protagonist and comic relief. He's jumpy and blasting into nervous confrontation with just about everybody in the game. I enjoyed his character because he managed to say things just as much inflammatory as they were polite and humble. He's basically a goofy guy who you'll probably enjoy.
