What’s the Best Way to Play Stardew Valley? PC vs. Console vs. Mobile?

Stardew Valley is one of the most beloved farming simulation games–a true indie classic, and I have covered it many times throughout this website and my YouTube channel. But with a game so popular comes the push for many different versions, systems, and formats to play—PC, Console, and Mobile—so, how do you decide which platform is best for you? In this guide, based on my latest YouTube video, I’ll break down the pros and cons of each version to help you find the perfect fit for your play style!

I have played this game on each type of system, and to spoil everything, ultimately PC is one of my favorite ways to play Stardew Valley due to the ability to mod. However, the other ways to play the game are not without merit. In fact there are quite a few pros and cons to each format from multiplayer options to the simplicity of pick up and go playing.

If you’re like me and love to kick back on a cozy afternoon and plant some parsnips in between chatting up townsfolk like Penny and Lewis, this is an article which will help you unlock all the different ways you can play Stardew Valley. So let’s get started.

PC is King for Mods, but is it Really Best for Stardew Valley?

PC is hands-down the most versatile way to play Stardew Valley. With access to mods, faster updates, and precise controls, it’s the ultimate choice for players who love to tweak their experience. It is also the original format of the game, so the most supported version of the game. That’s not to say the other versions aren’t supported, but PC will always be the first love for Stardew Valley

Pros:

Mod Support – Add new features, change the game’s look, or even overhaul gameplay completely! Whether you want to add new crops, or integrate cheat codes like the SMAPI mod, PC has you covered.

Keyboard & Mouse Controls – More precision for farming, fishing, and inventory management. In my experience, it’s also a little to easier to quickly harvest crops and such on PC as opposed to controller.

Fastest Updates – PC gets new patches and features before other platforms.

Multiplayer Flexibility – Easier to set up and play online with friends, with robust multiplayer support.

Cons:

No Portability – You’re tied to a computer… obviously.

Requires Setup – Installing mods or controllers can take extra effort. Although installing mods isn’t required, as the main appeal of PC for Stardew Valley, this might not be much of a draw if you’re not super tech savvy or can’t be bothered digging through file folders and such.

Stardew Valley for Console? Why Pick up and Go Gaming is a Plus

Playing Stardew Valley on a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch is a great way to enjoy the game in a relaxed setting, whether solo or with friends. Console has always been a preferred way to game in general, despite the origins of Stardew Valley. So, it’s no surprise that many like to play the game on this format. Personally, I find the convenient ease of playing on my Nintendo Switch makes this option really appealing overall. Here are some pros and cons.

Pros:

Couch Co-Op – Play with friends and family on the same screen! With split screen multiplayer, it’s a great way to play the game.

Controller Support – Comfortable, simple controls. Classic gaming

TV Display – Enjoy Stardew Valley on a large screen from the comfort of your couch.

Balanced Experience – No need to tweak settings or mods; just jump in and play. People often refer to this as Stardew vanilla, because it’s such a  pure way to play the game.

Cons:

Limited Mod Support – Console versions do not support mods. Unless you’re doing some serious tweaking, mods are out.

Slower Updates – Features take longer to roll out compared to PC. You might have to wait months after PC has already been updated.

Less Precision – Using a controller for inventory management can feel slower than a mouse. I personally do not like the feel of the Stardew Valley controls on console. It’s kind of clunky, since the game was intended for a PC player. It’s not a complete barrier though.

Stardew Valley on Mobile? A Strange But Compelling Choice

The iOS and Android versions of Stardew Valley make it easy to farm anywhere, whether you have a few minutes or hours to play. Ideal for players who want Stardew Valley on the go or prefer touchscreen controls. I have played this on my Android several times while waiting in doctor’s offices and such, and I have to say the added convenience makes this a compelling choice.

Pros:

Ultimate Portability – Play anytime, anywhere. Like I said, being able to play this while waiting for my doctor or dentist during checkups has been a lifesaver.

Affordable – A one-time purchase, with no console or PC required. Once you play you’ve got it. It’s also included with Google Play Pass.

Touchscreen Controls – Intuitive for casual play. I find this even easier than console controls.

Offline Play – No internet connection needed. A lot of mobile games need you to have an internet connection, which can use a lot of data, but not Stardew Valley.

Cons:

No Multiplayer – Mobile does not support co-op play. And likely never coming.

Limited Controls – Some tasks (like fishing) can be harder with touch controls. You’re really playing for the convenience and not precision.

Slower Updates – Features roll out later than on PC and Console. At glacial speed, in fact.

Which Version is Right For You?

We’ve talked about each way to play Stardew Valley. Each has it’s own merits, and I think ultimately it’s up to personal preference, but let’s just recap the benefits of each one.

  • Go for PC if you want mods, multiplayer, and the most features.

  • Pick Console if you love couch co-op and playing on the big screen.

  • Choose Mobile if you want a casual, on-the-go experience.

Each version has its strengths, so it really depends on how you prefer to play. I personally think PC is best for mods, console best for comfort, and mobile best for convenience, but ultimately it’s up to you and your own play style!
